About the Initiative

Origins

This initiative emerged from a growing recognition that judicial well-being is not only a professional necessity but a systemic imperative. Across jurisdictions, judges face increasingly complex pressures—ranging from excessive caseloads and professional isolation to online harassment and threats to personal safety. Yet, despite these challenges, judicial well-being has long remained a marginal concern within institutional frameworks and policy discourse.

In response, a group of international judicial leaders, academics, and policy experts united around a shared purpose: to create a research hub that empowers judiciaries to understand, assess, and improve the well-being of their judges through rigorous, evidence-based methodologies.

The project was inspired by the collaborative spirit that led to the adoption of the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being, and by the global recognition of judicial well-being as a matter of international importance—reflected in the United Nations’ proclamation of the International Day for Judicial Well-being. Both milestones underscore the urgent need for a systemic, evidence-based approach to institutional reform that places judicial well-being at the heart of judiciaries.

Purpose

The Judicial Well-being Research Hub serves as a free global resource for judiciaries, judicial associations, and judicial institutions committed to strengthening judicial resilience and integrity through evidence-based action. It is designed to:

  • Provide access to validated, expert-developed questionnaires focused on key dimensions of judicial well-being;

  • Enable secure, anonymous online studies to collect data within specific jurisdictions;

  • Generate automated, detailed reports that offer actionable, data-driven insights;

  • Support institutional reform, policy development, and judicial leadership strategies grounded in empirical evidence.

At its core, the initiative aims to eliminate financial and logistical barriers to conducting research. By offering a scalable and accessible platform, it empowers judicial systems—regardless of size, capacity, or geography—to take ownership of their well-being agendas and embed judicial well-being into their institutional priorities.

Vision

Our vision is to foster a global culture in which judicial well-being is recognized, prioritized, and actively supported as an essential component of judicial independence, integrity, and the delivery of quality justice. We envision a world where judicial officers can perform their duties with resilience and dignity—supported by institutions that value their mental, emotional, and professional health.

By integrating research, technology, and international collaboration, this initiative seeks to catalyze lasting change. We believe that by elevating judicial well-being, we not only protect those who serve on the bench—but also strengthen the rule of law itself.
